The ex-situ\nbiodiversity modelling and monitoring based on satellite time series\ndata could be an affordable and cost-efficient tool for improving the\nprioritization of conservation areas. Here, we provide a set of dynamic\nindicators for conservation prioritization by applying a habitat\nsuitability trend analysis of six flagship species over 19 years (2001\n\u2013 2019) derived from ecological niche models (MaxEnt) and time series\nof the Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) in\nAndaluc\u00eda (Spain, Southern Europe). Based on the annual HSI models of\nall species and using the spatial conservation prioritization tool\nMarxan, we derived inter-annual dynamic indicators for conservation\nprioritization as cost-effectiveness, adequacy, stability and\nconservation legacy. Overall, models showed a high performance (AUCmean\n= 0.92\u00b10.07, Boyce index = 0.84\u00b10.15 and Null models AUCmean= 0.63 \u00b1\n0.08), predicting 31% of negative trends and only 19% of positive\ntrends for the habitat availability across all species, showing a\ngeneralized habitat regression. The most contributing predictors were\nrelated to vegetation composition and structure (land cover), climate\n(land surface temperature), and energy balance (evapotranspiration),\nmatching with the species ecology. Marxan identified interannual\ndynamics for the priority areas, both outside and inside protected\nareas. Our results suggested that (1) additional areas than those\ncurrently protected need to be prioritized, and (2) areas recently\ndegraded could be restored considering the past importance for the\nconservation of the target species.
