Still, the impact\nof such evolutionary processes on coexistence remains elusive. Here, we\nstudied two spider mite species evolving separately on tomato plants\nthat either hyper-accumulated cadmium, a stressful environment for the\nmites, or on control plants without cadmium. Through combining\nexperimental evolution and structural stability theory, we found that\nadaptation to cadmium of both species shifted predictions from exclusion\nto coexistence. This shift occured due to a simultaneous increase in\nintra and a decrease in interspecific competition, but only in cadmium\nenvironments. These predictions were further confirmed with\ncomplementary experiments of population dynamics, underscoring that\nevolution of single species in a new environment, even in absence of\ninterspecific competitors, shapes species coexistence.
