We first determine which Spector classes on the structure of arithmetic arise from recursion in normal type 2 objects, giving a partial answer to a problem raised by Moschovakis [8], where the notion of Spector class was first essentially introduced. Our result here was independently discovered by S. G. Simpson (see [3]). We conclude our study of Spector classes by examining two simple relations between them and a natural hierarchy to which they give rise.<\/jats:p><jats:p>The second part of our paper is concerned with finding structural characterizations of classes of relations on the reals in the spirit of Moschovakis [7]. Our main result provides a <jats:italic>single<\/jats:italic> abstract characterization for the class of <jats:inline-graphic xmlns:xlink=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xlink\" mime-subtype=\"gif\" xlink:type=\"simple\" xlink:href=\"S0022481200054207_inline1\" \/> relations on the reals and the 2-envelope of <jats:sup>3<\/jats:sup><jats:italic>E<\/jats:italic>, the first one being valid if projective determinacy is true, the second if <jats:italic>V<\/jats:italic> = <jats:italic>L<\/jats:italic> is true.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.2307\/2272264","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2006,5,6]],"date-time":"2006-05-06T21:33:55Z","timestamp":1146951235000},"page":"19-24","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":6,"title":["On characterizing Spector classes"],"prefix":"10.1017","volume":"40","author":[{"given":"Leo A.","family":"Harrington","sequence":"first","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Alexander.
