We study subgroups <jats:italic>H<\/jats:italic> of <jats:italic>G<\/jats:italic> which contain <jats:italic>G<jats:sub>(A)<\/jats:sub><\/jats:italic>, <jats:italic>A<\/jats:italic> the algebraic closure of a finite set, generalizing results of Lascar [L] as well as giving an alternative characterization of the simple superstable theories of [P].
