Suppose one is given a distance <jats:italic>d<\/jats:italic> between any two models. One may then define the revision of a theory <jats:italic>K<\/jats:italic> by a formula <jats:italic>\u03b1<\/jats:italic> as the theory defined by the set of all those models of <jats:italic>\u03b1<\/jats:italic> that are closest, by <jats:italic>d<\/jats:italic>. to the set of models of <jats:italic>K<\/jats:italic>. This family is characterized by a set of rationality postulates that extends the AGM postulates. The new postulates describe properties of iterated
