Contendo cento e cinquenta estampas de espe\u0301cies da flora portuguesa, este livro destacou-se na literatura bota\u0302nica nacional, embora fosse uma edic\u0327a\u0303o po\u0301stuma e incompleta. Os seus desenhos originais, realizados em te\u0301cnica monotonal (tinta-da-china), integram atualmente a colec\u0327a\u0303o de ilustrac\u0327a\u0303o cienti\u0301fica do Museu de Histo\u0301ria Natural e da Cie\u0302ncia da Universidade do Porto (MHNC-UP). Uma vez que nenhum texto, ale\u0301m do prefa\u0301cio e dos nomes cienti\u0301ficos das plantas, acompanha as imagens no livro, as razo\u0303es que sustentaram a selec\u0327a\u0303o das espe\u0301cies a ilustrar, assim como a sua releva\u0302ncia bota\u0302nica, permaneceram desconhecidas. Neste artigo, tentamos reconstruir a histo\u0301ria desta iconografia, com base na ana\u0301lise de documentos epistolares e manuscritos. Focamo-nos tambe\u0301m na importa\u0302ncia da ilustrac\u0327a\u0303o cienti\u0301fica e no seu uso como ferramenta para a representac\u0327a\u0303o visual de espe\u0301cies bota\u0302nicas e para a comunicac\u0327a\u0303o de cie\u0302ncia. Assim, analisamos a metodologia empregue, quer na tipologia do arque\u0301tipo, quer na te\u0301cnica de execuc\u0327a\u0303o, bem como as eventuais restric\u0327o\u0303es que conduziram a essas opc\u0327o\u0303es. Ao analisar estas ilustrac\u0327o\u0303es bota\u0302nicas da primeira metade do se\u0301c. XX, procurou-se ainda explorar a pertine\u0302ncia destas iconografias em estudos bota\u0302nicos anteriores e contempora\u0302neos, bem como o seu potencial enquanto instrumentos de difusa\u0303o de cie\u0302ncia. Abstract The book \u201cIconografia Selecta da Flora Portuguesa\u201d, by Gonc\u0327alo Sampaio (botanist) and Sara Cabral Ferreira (illustrator), was first published in 1949. Containing one hundred and fifty prints of Portuguese flora species, this book stood out in the national botanical literature, although it was a posthumous and incomplete edition. The original book drawings, made in a monotonic technique, are part of the scientific illustration collection of the Museum of Natural History and Science of the University of Porto (MHNC- UP). Since no text, besides preface and the scientific names of the plants, accompanies the images in the book, the reasons which supported the selection of the species to be illustrated, as well as their botanical relevance, remained unknown. In this article, we attempted to reconstruct the history of this iconography, based on the analysis of epistolary documents and manuscripts. We also focus on the importance of scientific illustration and on its usage as a tool for the visual representation of botanical species and for science communication. Therefore, we analyzed the methodology used both in the typology of the archetype as in the execution techniques, as well as the restrictions that led to those options. By analyzing these botanical drawings of the first half of the twentieth century, it was also sought to explore the relevance of these iconographies in earlier and modern botanical studies, as well as their potential as instruments of diffusion of science.
