Estas colec\u0327o\u0303es foram usadas inicialmente pelos professores\/me\u0301dicos\/herbalistas no se\u0301culo XVI e mais tarde, nas primeiras viagens de explorac\u0327a\u0303o cienti\u0301fica, tornaram-se uma ferramenta essencial para todos os coletores e bota\u0302nicos. A contextualizac\u0327a\u0303o dos herba\u0301rios do ponto de vista da histo\u0301ria das cie\u0302ncias pode ampliar os usos de um herba\u0301rio e reforc\u0327ar a sua versatilidade. Desta perspetiva, os herba\u0301rios transcendem a sua func\u0327a\u0303o de reposito\u0301rio, refletindo contextos para ale\u0301m dos da esfera cienti\u0301fica, espelhando as poli\u0301ticas de desenvolvimento governamental, educacional e econo\u0301mico de um pai\u0301s. O Herba\u0301rio do Museu de Histo\u0301ria Natural e da Cie\u0302ncia da Universidade do Porto e\u0301 uma colec\u0327a\u0303o reconhecida mundialmente como o Herba\u0301rio da Universidade do Porto (PO) e e\u0301 uma colec\u0327a\u0303o de refere\u0302ncia da flora Portuguesa, contendo colec\u0327o\u0303es histo\u0301ricas, privadas e acade\u0301micas constitui\u0301das desde o se\u0301culo XIX. Tomando como ponto de partida o herba\u0301rio (colec\u0327a\u0303o bota\u0302nica desidratada entre papel) e o Herba\u0301rio da Universidade do Porto (como instituic\u0327a\u0303o responsa\u0301vel da organizac\u0327a\u0303o e conservac\u0327a\u0303o de va\u0301rios tipos de colec\u0327o\u0303es bota\u0302nicas), este trabalho mostra como os herba\u0301rios e os Herba\u0301rios sa\u0303o vei\u0301culos para a compreensa\u0303o de assuntos de va\u0301rias esferas e materializam a sua interconexa\u0303o, promovendo uma aprendizagem de cara\u0301cter global, fomentando a sua conscie\u0302ncia histo\u0301rica e ci\u0301vica. Abstract Herbaria are biological collections that include reference material for anyone who needs to identify or preserve plants, fungi or algae. These collections were used by the first professors\/doctors\/herbalists in the 16th century, and later, on the first voyages of scientific exploration becoming an essential tool for all collectors and botanists. The contextualization of herbaria from the point of view of the history of science can broaden the uses of a herbarium and reinforce its versatility. From this perspective, herbaria transcend their repository function, reflecting contexts beyond those of the scientific sphere, mirroring a country's government, educational and economic development policies. The Herbarium of the Museum of Natural History and Science of the University of Porto is a collection recognized worldwide as the Herbarium of the University of Porto (PO) and is a reference collection of Portuguese flora, containing historical, private and academic collections since the 19th century. Taking as its starting point the herbarium (dehydrated botanical collection between paper) and the Herbarium of the University of Porto (as the institution responsible for the organization and conservation of various types of biological collections), this paper shows how herbaria and Herbaria are vehicles for the understanding of subjects from various spheres and materialize their interconnectedness, promoting a global learning, fostering their historical and civic awareness.
