A explosa\u0303o cienti\u0301fica que ocorreu no po\u0301s-Segunda Guerra Mundial motivou uma procura crescente de resposta para as novas necessidades de ensino, considerado desajustado a\u0300 nova realidade. Movimentos reformistas no ensino da Matema\u0301tica despoletaram pelo mundo com encontros cienti\u0301ficos onde se debateram as novas necessidades, e o sistema educativo foi sujeito a uma completa reestruturac\u0327a\u0303o. Tambe\u0301m em Portugal, um pouco na cauda do que se passava la\u0301 fora, se viveram tempos de mudanc\u0327a no ensino da Matema\u0301tica. Novas poli\u0301ticas educativas conduziram a reformas no sistema de ensino, destacando-se notavelmente as impulsionadas pela excele\u0302ncia pedago\u0301gica de Sebastia\u0303o e Silva. Abstract In this work we reflect upon the teaching of Mathematics around the sixties in Portugal, focusing on aspects that, to us, present a key role in the educational reform carried out during this period. The scientific explosion that occurred in the post-Second World War led to an increasing demand to fulfil the new educational needs, as they were maladjusted to the new reality. Reformist movements in the teaching of Mathematics took place around the world. Scientific meetings emerged to discuss the new educational needs and the educational system suffered complete restructuring. Even though Portugal was a little on the foot of what happened in other countries, times of change in teaching Mathematics also occurred. New educational policies led to reforms in the educational system, driven by the pedagogical excellence of Sebastia\u0303o e Silva. \u201cModern Mathematics\u201d was born.
