The chapter details how the war in Guatemala left in its wake viable parties of all three prototypes: a militarily victorious successor party, a militarily vanquished one, and a nonbelligerent party. It also studies how a successful brutal belligerent maneuvered not against a rival belligerent successor as in El Salvador, but against a strong party without blood on its hands. The chapter talks about the nonbelligerent and the successful belligerent parties in Guatemala that were right-wing and had equal claim to the security issue by a partisan-ownership explanation.
