The systems constituted by S. salpa and Robphildollfusium fractum and by B. capriscus and Neoapocreadium chabaudi were tested as potential bioindicators to monitor environmental Hg pollution in marine ecosystems. Mercury and selenium concentrations were assessed in kidney, liver and muscle of 51 S. salpa and of 45 B. capriscus as well as in their respective endoparasites R. fractum and N. chabaudi. The Se:Hg molar ratios were evaluated for both species across the study areas. Surprisingly, the Se:Hg molar ratio in B. capriscus muscle from Mahdia is significantly lower than in Sfax. Our results indicate that some parasites may also be implicated in the amount of Se and Hg available in tissues and therefore contribute to oscillations of the Se:Hg molar ratios. In the model involving the carnivorous species (B. capriscus), the 5.1-times higher levels of mercury in N. chabaudi than in B. capriscus muscle in Sfax enable this fluke to be a sensitive biomonitoring tool for Hg pollution. The present results confirm that the habitual consumption of S. salpa should not suppose any potential health risk for Tunisian people. On the other hand, the consumption of B. capriscus may be of concern and further monitoring is advisable, since the Hg average concentration in Mahdia was above the maximum allowed Hg concentration in the edible portion of fish fixed by the European Union.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.2478\/s11686-014-0293-4","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2014,9,19]],"date-time":"2014-09-19T00:25:25Z","timestamp":1411086325000},"update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/springer_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":10,"title":["Total mercury and selenium concentrations in Sarpa salpa and Balistes capriscus and in their respective Digenean endoparasites Robphildollfusium fractum and Neoapocreadium chabaudi from Tunisia"],"prefix":"10.2478","volume":"59","author":[{"given":"Jordi","family":"Torres","sequence":"first","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Hichem","family":"Kacem","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Catarina","family":"Eira","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Lassad","family":"Neifar","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Jordi","family":"Miquel","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]}],"member":"374","reference":[{"key":"ref221","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","first-page":"126","DOI":"10.1017\/S003118200300372X.http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1017\/S003118200300372X","article-title":"Accumulation of heavy metals by intestinal helminths in fish : an overview and perspective","volume":"23","author":"Sures","year":"2003","journal-title":"Parasitology"},{"key":"ref271","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","first-page":"949","DOI":"10.1016\/S0160-4120(03)00061-8.http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1016\/S0160-4120(03)00061-8","article-title":"Heavy metals in fish ( Solea vulgaris Anguilla anguilla and Liza aurata ) from salt marshes on the southern Atlantic coast of Spain","volume":"28","author":"Usero","year":"2003","journal-title":"Environment International"},{"key":"ref101","first-page":"364","article-title":"of the European Union Commission Regulation ( EC","volume":"11","author":"JO","year":"1881","journal-title":"Official Journal"},{"key":"ref211","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","first-page":"1117","DOI":"10.1016\/S0020-7519(02)00083-8.http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1016\/S0020-7519(02)00083-8","article-title":"Competition for minerals between Acanthocephalus lucii and its definitive host pearch Perca fluviatilis ) for","volume":"22","author":"Sures","year":"2002","journal-title":"International Journal Parasitology"},{"key":"ref21","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","first-page":"114","DOI":"10.1016\/j.enres.2012.02.004.http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1016\/j.envres.2012.02.004","article-title":"Selenium and mercury molar ratios in saltwater fish from New Jersey : individual and species variability complicate use in human health fish consumption advisories","volume":"3","author":"Burger","year":"2012","journal-title":"Environmental Research"},{"key":"ref121","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","first-page":"3919","DOI":"10.1021\/es803203g.http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1021\/es803203g","article-title":"Sickle How might selenium moderate the toxic effects of mercury in stream fish in western US","volume":"13","author":"Peterson","year":"2009","journal-title":"Environmental Science Technology"},{"key":"ref41","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","first-page":"283","DOI":"10.1074\/jbc.M710133200.http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1074\/jbc.M710133200","article-title":"Inhibition of the human tioredoxin system A molecular mechanism of mercury toxicity of","volume":"5","author":"Carvalho","year":"2008","journal-title":"Journal Biological Chemistry"},{"key":"ref61","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","first-page":"174","DOI":"10.1007\/s10661-010-1445-0.http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1007\/s10661-010-1445-0","article-title":"Accumulation of some heavy metals in Hysterothylacium aduncum and its host sea bream Sparus aurata from North -
