We proposed an alternative clustering similarity index that considers the similarity, the weight and the shape of products. This similarity index was further incorporated in a storage allocation heuristic procedure to set the location of the products. We test the procedure in a retail company that supplies over 191 stores, in Northern Portugal. When comparing the strategy currently used in the company with this procedure, we found out that our approach enabled a reduction of up to 40% on the picking distance; a percentage of improvement that is 32% higher than the one achieved by applying the Jaccard index, a similarity index commonly used in the literature. This allows warehouses to save time and work faster.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.24840\/2183-6493_007.003_0004","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2021,4,30]],"date-time":"2021-04-30T09:45:55Z","timestamp":1619775955000},"page":"34-52","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":7,"title":["Improving Order-picking Operations with Precedence Constraints through Efficient Storage Location Assignment"],"prefix":"10.24840","volume":"7","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-8284-9291","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Maria","family":"Trindade","sequence":"first","affiliation":[]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-0578-1593","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Paulo","family":"Sousa","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-4439-6230","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Maria","family":"Moreira","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]}],"member":"10468","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2021,4,30]]},"container-title":["U.Porto Journal of Engineering"],"original-title":[],"link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/journalengineering.fe.up.pt\/index.php\/upjeng\/article\/download\/2183-6493_007-003_0004\/503","content-type":"application\/pdf","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"text-mining"},{"URL":"https:\/\/journalengineering.fe.up.pt\/index.php\/upjeng\/article\/download\/2183-6493_007-003_0004\/503","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2021,4,30]],"date-time":"2021-04-30T09:46:04Z","timestamp":1619775964000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/journalengineering.fe.up.pt\/index.php\/upjeng\/article\/view\/2183-6493_007-003_0004"}},"subtitle":["Evidence from a Retail Company"],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2021,4,30]]},"references-count":0,"journal-issue":{"issue":"3","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2021,4,30]]}},"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.24840\/2183-6493_007.003_0004","relation":{},"ISSN":["2183-6493"],"issn-type":[{"value":"2183-6493","type":"electronic"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2021,4,30]]}}}
