{"status":"ok","message-type":"work","message-version":"1.0.0","message":{"indexed":{"date-parts":[[2025,5,14]],"date-time":"2025-05-14T08:12:52Z","timestamp":1747210372513,"version":"3.40.5"},"reference-count":0,"publisher":"University of Porto","issue":"1","license":[{"start":{"date-parts":[[2020,12,1]],"date-time":"2020-12-01T00:00:00Z","timestamp":1606780800000},"content-version":"unspecified","delay-in-days":0,"URL":"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-nc\/4.0"}],"content-domain":{"domain":[],"crossmark-restriction":false},"short-container-title":["Sophia"],"abstract":"<jats:p>The scope of this text is to think about how the human need for shelter began to appear as a foundational allegory for the discipline of architecture in the early modern age (XVIII - XIX), particularly in Laugier\u2019s \u201cPrimitive Hut\u201d of 1753 and Ledoux\u2019s \u201cL\u2019Abri du Pauvre\u201d of 1804.\r\nAt roughly the same periods as these architects were investing the discipline with a new existential calling, new European visions of society, its organization and constraints were exploding the imaginary and concrete limits of the European polity which, at the time, was a planetary polity. Between Rousseau\u2019s social contract, Kant\u2019s Republic, Hegel\u2019s \u201cstate,\u201d among many other visions spanning from 1753 to 1804, Europe\u2019s subjects, government and power, and their respective relationships, were structurally changed.\r\nAssembled in the same picture, these allegories and visions give us many possibilities of reflection about architecture\u2019s new position and role within the political in the modern age. On the other hand, it may help us reflect on what architecture articulates in the outbreak of new social contexts. Heeding Walter Benjamin, we propose to take control of these memories, disparate and synchronic as they might \u201creally have been,\u201d to ask in a moment of danger: why doesn\u2019t architecture shelter today?
