They have facilitated information dissemination in ways that have been beneficial for their users but it is also a common belief that they are often used strategically in order to spread information that only serves the objectives of particular users. These properties have inspired a revision of classical opinion formation models from sociology using game-theoretic notions and tools. We follow the same modeling approach, focusing on scenarios where the opinion expressed by each user is a compromise between her internal belief and the opinions of a small number of neighbors among her social acquaintances. We formulate simple games that capture this behavior and quantify the inefficiency of equilibria using the well-known notion of the price of anarchy. Our results indicate that compromise comes at a cost that strongly depends on the neighborhood size.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.24963\/ijcai.2017\/21","type":"proceedings-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2017,7,28]],"date-time":"2017-07-28T05:14:07Z","timestamp":1501218847000},"page":"142-148","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Bounding the Inefficiency of Compromise"],"prefix":"10.24963","author":[{"given":"Ioannis","family":"Caragiannis","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Patras"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Panagiotis","family":"Kanellopoulos","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"CTI & University of Patras"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Alexandros A.","family":"Voudouris","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Patras"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"10584","event":{"number":"26","sponsor":["International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence Organization (IJCAI)","University of Technology Sydney (UTS)","Australian Computer Society (ACS)"],"acronym":"IJCAI-2017","name":"Twenty-Sixth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence","start":{"date-parts":[[2017,8,19]]},"theme":"Artificial Intelligence","location":"Melbourne, Australia","end":{"date-parts":[[2017,8,26]]}},"container-title":["Proceedings of the Twenty-Sixth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence"],"original-title":[],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2017,7,28]],"date-time":"2017-07-28T07:51:52Z","timestamp":1501228312000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/www.ijcai.org\/proceedings\/2017\/21"}},"subtitle":[],"proceedings-subject":"Artificial Intelligence Research Articles","short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2017,8]]},"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.24963\/ijcai.2017\/21","relation":{},"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2017,8]]}}}
