We investigate both a common RL visualization, saliency maps (the focus of attention), and a more recent explanation type, reward-decomposition bars (predictions of future types of rewards). We designed a 124 participant, four-treatment experiment to compare participants? mental models of an RL agent in a simple Real-Time Strategy (RTS) game. Our results show that the combination of both saliency and reward bars were needed to achieve a statistically significant improvement in mental model score over the control. In addition, our qualitative analysis of the data reveals a number of effects for further study.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.24963\/ijcai.2019\/184","type":"proceedings-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2019,7,28]],"date-time":"2019-07-28T07:46:05Z","timestamp":1564299965000},"page":"1328-1334","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":31,"title":["Explaining Reinforcement Learning to Mere Mortals: An Empirical Study"],"prefix":"10.24963","author":[{"given":"Andrew","family":"Anderson","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Oregon State University"}]},{"given":"Jonathan","family":"Dodge","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Oregon State University"}]},{"given":"Amrita","family":"Sadarangani","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Oregon State University"}]},{"given":"Zoe","family":"Juozapaitis","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Oregon State University"}]},{"given":"Evan","family":"Newman","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Oregon State University"}]},{"given":"Jed","family":"Irvine","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Oregon State University"}]},{"given":"Souti","family":"Chattopadhyay","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Oregon State University"}]},{"given":"Alan","family":"Fern","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Oregon State University"}]},{"given":"Margaret","family":"Burnett","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Oregon State University"}]}],"member":"10584","event":{"number":"28","sponsor":["International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence Organization (IJCAI)"],"acronym":"IJCAI-2019","name":"Twenty-Eighth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence {IJCAI-19}","start":{"date-parts":[[2019,8,10]]},"theme":"Artificial Intelligence","location":"Macao, China","end":{"date-parts":[[2019,8,16]]}},"container-title":["Proceedings of the Twenty-Eighth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence"],"original-title":[],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2019,7,28]],"date-time":"2019-07-28T07:47:25Z","timestamp":1564300045000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/www.ijcai.org\/proceedings\/2019\/184"}},"subtitle":[],"proceedings-subject":"Artificial Intelligence Research Articles","short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2019,8]]},"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.24963\/ijcai.2019\/184","relation":{},"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2019,8]]}}}
