LM techniques lack the ability to receive guidance from the user to achieve a specific goal, resulting in stories that don't have a clear sense of progression and lack coherence. We present a reward-shaping technique that analyzes a story corpus and produces intermediate rewards that are backpropagated into a pre-trained LM in order to guide the model toward a given goal. Automated evaluations show our technique can create a model that generates story plots which consistently achieve a specified goal. Human-subject studies show that the generated stories have more plausible event ordering than baseline plot generation techniques.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.24963\/ijcai.2019\/829","type":"proceedings-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2019,7,28]],"date-time":"2019-07-28T07:46:05Z","timestamp":1564299965000},"page":"5982-5988","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":39,"title":["Controllable Neural Story Plot Generation via Reward Shaping"],"prefix":"10.24963","author":[{"given":"Pradyumna","family":"Tambwekar","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Interactive Computing, Georgia Institute of Technology"}]},{"given":"Murtaza","family":"Dhuliawala","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Interactive Computing, Georgia Institute of Technology"}]},{"given":"Lara J.","family":"Martin","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Interactive Computing, Georgia Institute of Technology"}]},{"given":"Animesh","family":"Mehta","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Interactive Computing, Georgia Institute of Technology"}]},{"given":"Brent","family":"Harrison","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Computer Science, University of Kentucky"}]},{"given":"Mark O.","family":"Riedl","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Interactive Computing, Georgia Institute of Technology"}]}],"member":"10584","event":{"name":"Twenty-Eighth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence {IJCAI-19}","theme":"Artificial Intelligence","location":"Macao, China","acronym":"IJCAI-2019","number":"28","sponsor":["International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence Organization (IJCAI)"],"start":{"date-parts":[[2019,8,10]]},"end":{"date-parts":[[2019,8,16]]}},"container-title":["Proceedings of the Twenty-Eighth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence"],"original-title":[],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2019,7,28]],"date-time":"2019-07-28T07:52:05Z","timestamp":1564300325000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/www.ijcai.org\/proceedings\/2019\/829"}},"subtitle":[],"proceedings-subject":"Artificial Intelligence Research Articles","short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2019,8]]},"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.24963\/ijcai.2019\/829","relation":{},"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2019,8]]}}}
