This paper presents DeepExtrema, a novel framework that combines a deep neural network (DNN) with generalized extreme value (GEV) distribution to forecast the block maximum value of a time series. Implementing such a network is a challenge as the framework must preserve the inter-dependent constraints among the GEV model parameters even when the DNN is initialized. We describe our approach to address this challenge and present an architecture that enables both conditional mean and quantile prediction of the block maxima. The extensive experiments performed on both real-world and synthetic data demonstrated the superiority of DeepExtrema compared to other baseline methods.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.24963\/ijcai.2022\/413","type":"proceedings-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2022,7,16]],"date-time":"2022-07-16T02:55:56Z","timestamp":1657940156000},"page":"2980-2986","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":7,"title":["DeepExtrema: A Deep Learning Approach for Forecasting Block Maxima in Time Series Data"],"prefix":"10.24963","author":[{"given":"Asadullah Hill","family":"Galib","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Michigan State University"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Andrew","family":"McDonald","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Michigan State University"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Tyler","family":"Wilson","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Michigan State University"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Lifeng","family":"Luo","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Michigan State University"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Pang-Ning","family":"Tan","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Michigan State University"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"10584","event":{"name":"Thirty-First International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence {IJCAI-22}","theme":"Artificial Intelligence","location":"Vienna, Austria","acronym":"IJCAI-2022","number":"31","sponsor":["International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence Organization (IJCAI)"],"start":{"date-parts":[[2022,7,23]]},"end":{"date-parts":[[2022,7,29]]}},"container-title":["Proceedings of the Thirty-First International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence"],"original-title":[],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2022,7,18]],"date-time":"2022-07-18T11:09:34Z","timestamp":1658142574000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/www.ijcai.org\/proceedings\/2022\/413"}},"subtitle":[],"proceedings-subject":"Artificial Intelligence Research Articles","short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2022,7]]},"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.24963\/ijcai.2022\/413","relation":{},"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2022,7]]}}}
