I survey key tendencies that people exhibit when they construct explanations and make inferences from them, of relevance to the provision of automated explanations for decisions by AI systems. I first review experimental discoveries of some tendencies people exhibit when they construct explanations, including evidence on the illusion of explanatory depth, intuitive versus reflective explanations, and explanatory stances. I then consider discoveries of how people reason about causal explanations, including evidence on inference suppression, causal discounting, and explanation simplicity. I argue that central to the XAI endeavor is the requirement that automated explanations provided by an AI system should make sense to human users.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.24963\/ijcai.2023\/733","type":"proceedings-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2023,8,11]],"date-time":"2023-08-11T08:31:30Z","timestamp":1691742690000},"page":"6536-6544","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":20,"title":["Good Explanations in Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI): Evidence from Human Explanatory Reasoning"],"prefix":"10.24963","author":[{"given":"Ruth M.J.","family":"Byrne","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Trinity College Dublin, University of Dublin, Ireland"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"10584","event":{"name":"Thirty-Second International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence {IJCAI-23}","theme":"Artificial Intelligence","location":"Macau, SAR China","acronym":"IJCAI-2023","number":"32","sponsor":["International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence Organization (IJCAI)"],"start":{"date-parts":[[2023,8,19]]},"end":{"date-parts":[[2023,8,25]]}},"container-title":["Proceedings of the Thirty-Second International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence"],"original-title":[],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2023,8,11]],"date-time":"2023-08-11T08:54:50Z","timestamp":1691744090000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/www.ijcai.org\/proceedings\/2023\/733"}},"subtitle":[],"proceedings-subject":"Artificial Intelligence Research Articles","short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2023,8]]},"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.24963\/ijcai.2023\/733","relation":{},"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2023,8]]}}}
