However, these techniques cannot handle specifications that correctly characterise systems with stochastic behaviour, which occur commonly in reinforcement learning and formal verification. We consider the passive learning problem of inferring a Boolean combination of probabilistic LTL (PLTL) formulas from a set of Markov chains, classified as either positive or negative. We propose a novel learning algorithm that infers concise PLTL specifications, leveraging grammar-based enumeration, search heuristics, probabilistic model checking and Boolean set-cover procedures. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our algorithm in two use cases: learning from policies induced by RL algorithms and learning from variants of a probabilistic model. In both cases, our method automatically and efficiently extracts PLTL specifications that succinctly characterize the temporal differences between the policies or model variants.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.24963\/ijcai.2025\/517","type":"proceedings-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,9,19]],"date-time":"2025-09-19T08:10:40Z","timestamp":1758269440000},"page":"4642-4650","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Learning Probabilistic Temporal Logic Specifications for Stochastic Systems"],"prefix":"10.24963","author":[{"given":"Rajarshi","family":"Roy","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Oxford"}]},{"given":"Yash","family":"Pote","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"National University of Singapore"}]},{"given":"Dave","family":"Parker","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Oxford"}]},{"given":"Marta","family":"Kwiatkowska","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Oxford"}]}],"member":"10584","event":{"number":"34","sponsor":["International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence Organization (IJCAI)"],"acronym":"IJCAI-2025","name":"Thirty-Fourth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence {IJCAI-25}","start":{"date-parts":[[2025,8,16]]},"theme":"Artificial Intelligence","location":"Montreal, Canada","end":{"date-parts":[[2025,8,22]]}},"container-title":["Proceedings of the Thirty-Fourth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence"],"original-title":[],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,9,23]],"date-time":"2025-09-23T11:34:15Z","timestamp":1758627255000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/www.ijcai.org\/proceedings\/2025\/517"}},"subtitle":[],"proceedings-subject":"Artificial Intelligence Research Articles","short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2025,9]]},"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.24963\/ijcai.2025\/517","relation":{},"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2025,9]]}}}
