The proposed logic supports a simple new connective whose semantics can be defined in terms of finite lists of truth values. We demonstrate that, despite the well-known theoretical limitations that pose barriers to the quantitative representation of lexicographic preferences, there exists a subset of the rational numbers over which the proposed new connective can be naturally defined.  Lexicographic logic can be used to define in a simple way some well-known preferential operators, like \"A and if possible B\", and \"A or failing that B\". We argue that the new logic is an effective formalism for ranking query results according to the satisfaction level of user preferences.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.24963\/kr.2021\/62","type":"proceedings-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2021,10,11]],"date-time":"2021-10-11T12:45:56Z","timestamp":1633956356000},"page":"646-650","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":2,"title":["A Many-valued Logic for Lexicographic Preference Representation"],"prefix":"10.24963","author":[{"given":"Angelos","family":"Charalambidis","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"National and Kapodistrian University of Athens"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"George","family":"Papadimitriou","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"National and Kapodistrian University of Athens"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Panos","family":"Rondogiannis","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"National and Kapodistrian University of Athens"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Antonis","family":"Troumpoukis","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"National and Kapodistrian University of Athens"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"10584","event":{"number":"18","sponsor":["Artificial Intelligence Journal","Principles of Knowledge Representation and Reasoning Inc.","Sea AI Lab","Potassco Solutions","European Association for Artificial Intelligence"],"acronym":"KR-2021","name":"18th International Conference on Principles of Knowledge Representation and Reasoning {KR-2021}","start":{"date-parts":[[2020,11,12]]},"theme":"Artificial Intelligence","location":"Hanoii, Vietnam","end":{"date-parts":[[2021,11,18]]}},"container-title":["Proceedings of the Eighteenth International Conference on Principles of Knowledge Representation and Reasoning"],"original-title":[],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2021,10,11]],"date-time":"2021-10-11T12:46:28Z","timestamp":1633956388000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/proceedings.kr.org\/2021\/62"}},"subtitle":[],"proceedings-subject":"Artificial Intelligence Research Articles","short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2021,9]]},"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.24963\/kr.2021\/62","relation":{},"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2021,9]]}}}
