This problem has many applications, ranging from diagnosis to explainability and repair. ABox abduction has been well-investigated for consistent KBs and classical semantics, but little is known for the case of inconsistent KBs, which can be caused by erroneous data.\nIn this paper we define suitable notions of abduction in this setting and propose criteria that guide abduction towards useful hypotheses. To regain meaningful reasoning in the presence of inconsistencies, we use well-established repair semantics.\nWe provide a comprehensive landscape of the complexity of ABox abduction under repair semantics, treating different variants of the abduction problem for the light-weight description logics DL-Lite and EL_bot.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.24963\/kr.2026\/37","type":"proceedings-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2026,7,16]],"date-time":"2026-07-16T11:15:53Z","timestamp":1784200553000},"page":"390-400","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["ABox Abduction for Inconsistent Knowledge Bases under Repair Semantics"],"prefix":"10.24963","author":[{"given":"Anselm","family":"Haak","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Knowledge Representation Group, Paderborn University"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Patrick","family":"Koopmann","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Knowledge in Artificial Intelligence, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Yasir","family":"Mahmood","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Data Science Group, Heinz Nixdorf Institute, Paderborn University"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Anni-Yasmin","family":"Turhan","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Knowledge Representation Group, Paderborn University"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"10584","event":{"name":"23nd International Conference on Principles of Knowledge Representation and Reasoning {KR-2026}","theme":"Artificial Intelligence","location":"Lisbon, Portuagal","acronym":"KR-2026","number":"23","sponsor":["Artificial Intelligence Journal","Principles of Knowledge Representation and Reasoning Inc.","European Association for Artificial Intelligence"],"start":{"date-parts":[[2026,7,20]]},"end":{"date-parts":[[2026,7,18]]}},"container-title":["Proceedings of the TwentyThird International Conference on Principles of Knowledge Representation and Reasoning"],"original-title":[],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2026,7,16]],"date-time":"2026-07-16T11:16:04Z","timestamp":1784200564000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/proceedings.kr.org\/2026\/37"}},"subtitle":[],"proceedings-subject":"Artificial Intelligence Research Articles","short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2026,7]]},"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.24963\/kr.2026\/37","relation":{},"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2026,7]]}}}
