Numerous libraries in\nPython support interactivity, and workflows that combine Jupyter and\nIPyWidgets in particular make it straightforward to build data analysis\ntools on the fly. However, the field is missing the ability to arbitrarily\noverlay widgets and plots on top of others to support more flexible\ndetails-on-demand techniques. This work discusses some limitations of the\nbase IPyWidgets library, explains the benefits of IPyVuetify and how it\naddresses these limitations, and finally presents a new open-source solution\nthat builds on IPyVuetify to provide easily integrated widget overlays in\nJupyter.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.25080\/gvht1072","type":"proceedings-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2024,10,4]],"date-time":"2024-10-04T20:42:26Z","timestamp":1728074546000},"page":"291-308","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Supporting Greater Interactivity in the IPython Visualization Ecosystem"],"prefix":"10.25080","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-5036-5433","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Nathan","family":"Martindale","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Oak Ridge National Laboratory"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0000-4565-2692","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Jacob","family":"Smith","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Oak Ridge National Laboratory"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-1319-1056","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Lisa","family":"Linville","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Sandia National Laboratories"}]}],"member":"32550","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2024,7,10]]},"reference":[{"key":"shneidermanEyesHaveIt1996","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1109\/VL.1996.545307"},{"key":"ipympl","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.5281\/zenodo.10974323"},{"key":"altair","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.21105\/joss.01057"},{"key":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.5281\/zenodo.1286976","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.5281\/ZENODO.1286976"},{"key":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.5281\/zenodo.11182005","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.5281\/ZENODO.11182005"},{"key":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.48550\/arxiv.1802.03426","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.48550\/ARXIV.1802.03426"}],"event":{"name":"Python in Science Conference","number":"23rd","location":"Tacoma, Washington","acronym":"SciPy"},"container-title":["Proceedings of the Python in Science Conference","Proceedings of the 23rd Python in Science Conference"],"original-title":[],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2024,11,5]],"date-time":"2024-11-05T21:10:23Z","timestamp":1730841023000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/doi.curvenote.com\/10.25080\/GVHT1072"}},"subtitle":["IPyWidgets, IPyVuetify, and beyond"],"proceedings-subject":"Scientific Computing with Python","short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2024,7,10]]},"references-count":6,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.25080\/gvht1072","relation":{},"ISSN":["2575-9752"],"issn-type":[{"type":"print","value":"2575-9752"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2024,7,10]]}}}
