Social norms, therefore, are important for establishing the guardrails that ensure desirable interactions in a way that is consistent with essential values, such as human safety. Managing human-AI ecologies requires specifying norms to enable coordination in known situations but also allowing for the emergence of norms to enable coordination in unspecified, unstructured situations. We integrate predictive processing theory and social norm theory to explain how existing norms are enacted and reinforced based on agents\u2019 predictive models and how new norms emerge as agents update their predictive models in response to prediction errors in uncertain coordination scenarios. Rooted in this perspective, we develop a design theory that emphasizes design for predictability and propose a set of design principles for managers and developers to encode norms to evolve in human-AI ecologies, monitor outcomes, and intervene when necessary.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.25300\/misq\/2025\/18058","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,9,18]],"date-time":"2025-09-18T17:22:18Z","timestamp":1758216138000},"page":"1239-1266","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":5,"title":["Guardrails for Human-AI Ecologies: Norm-Based Coordination and Design for Predictability"],"prefix":"10.25300","volume":"49","author":[{"given":"Thomas","family":"Grisold","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"WU Vienna University of Economics and Business, Vienna, AUSTRIA, and University of St. Gallen, St. Gallen, Switzerland"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Nicholas","family":"Berente","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Notre Dame South Bend, IN, U.S.A."}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Stefan","family":"Seidel","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Cologne Cologne, Germany"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"10933","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2025,12,1]]},"reference":[{"issue":"1","key":"2025120114413451500_b1-01_tr_10_25300_misq_2025_18058","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1038\/s41467-017-00731-0","article-title":"Peer punishment promotes enforcement of bad social norms","volume":"8","author":"Abbink","year":"2017","journal-title":"Nature Communications"},{"issue":"3","key":"2025120114413451500_b2-01_tr_10_25300_misq_2025_18058","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","first-page":"352","DOI":"10.1111\/jtsb.12071","article-title":"The decline in shared collective conscience as found in the shifting norms and values of etiquette manuals","volume":"45","author":"Abrutyn","year":"2015","journal-title":"Journal for the Theory of Social Behaviour"},{"issue":"3","key":"2025120114413451500_b3-01_tr_10_25300_misq_2025_18058","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","first-page":"420","DOI":"10.2307\/2392320","article-title":"Input uncertainty and organizational coordination in hospital emergency units","volume":"27","author":"Argote","year":"1982","journal-title":"Administrative Science Quarterly"},{"issue":"1","key":"2025120114413451500_b4-01_tr_10_25300_misq_2025_18058","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","first-page":"315","DOI":"10.25300\/MISQ\/2021\/15882","article-title":"The next generation of research on IS use: A theoretical framework of delegation to and from agentic IS artifacts","volume":"45","author":"Baird","year":"2021","journal-title":"MIS Quarterly"},{"key":"2025120114413451500_b5-01_tr_10_25300_misq_2025_18058","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","DOI":"10.1093\/acprof:osobl\/9780199576081.001.0001","volume-title":"Understanding regulation: theory, strategy, and practice","author":"Baldwin","year":"2011"},{"key":"2025120114413451500_b6-01_tr_10_25300_misq_2025_18058","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","first-page":"573","DOI":"10.1093\/oxfordhb\/9780199680832.013.49","article-title":"Regulating in the face of sociotechnical change","volume-title":"The Oxford handbook of law, regulation and technology","author":"Bennett Moses","year":"2016"},{"issue":"4","key":"2025120114413451500_b7-01_tr_10_25300_misq_2025_18058","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","first-page":"357","DOI":"10.1111\/j.1365-2575.2010.00353.x","article-title":"Ethical implications of social stratification in information systems research","volume":"21","author":"Berente","year":"2011","journal-title":"Information Systems Journal"},{"issue":"3","key":"2025120114413451500_b8-01_tr_10_25300_misq_2025_18058","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","first-page":"1433","DOI":"10.25300\/MISQ\/2021\/16274","article-title":"Managing articial intelligence","volume":"45","author":"Berente","year":"2021","journal-title":"MIS Quarterly"},{"issue":"5","key":"2025120114413451500_b9-01_tr_10_25300_misq_2025_18058","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","first-page":"45","DOI":"10.1145\/3633455","article-title":"Test-driven ethics for machine learning","volume":"67","author":"Berente","year":"2024","journal-title":"Communications of the ACM"},{"key":"2025120114413451500_b10-01_tr_10_25300_misq_2025_18058","unstructured":"Blake, R.\n (2023).
