The event killed at least 16 people in China (546 missing, as of 29 August) and, in Nepal, 903 bodies were recovered with 4,247 missing (NDRRMA, 31 August). Using only open data \u2014 seismic records, Sentinel-1 SAR backscatter change, emergency mapping (Copernicus EMSR927, HOT\/OSM) and official reports from both countries \u2014 we reconstruct the full cascade and assess the origin of the initial flood wave: it reached the first inhabited stream gauge 12.8 min after the trigger, far too fast to be the overflow of the main barrier lake (which began only on 28 August), and was generated by the avalanche-emplaced debris flow and\/or a rapid release from the debris dam, which cannot be separated with openly available data. SAR change detection identifies about 7.5 km\u00b2 of strongly modified surface within the source-sector analysis window; under an assumed affected-layer thickness of 1\u20135 m this corresponds to a first-order volume-equivalent scale of the order of 10\u2077 m\u00b3, which should not be interpreted as a direct estimate of the detached source volume. ERA5-Land shows a modest warm anomaly (+0.59 K, July\u2013August 2026 vs. 1991\u20132020).
