When outlining the second principle of the linear signifier, Saussure made a distinction between auditory and visual signifiers - a differentiation widely adopted by cartographers regarding cartographic signs. The first principle of the arbitrary nature of the sign has been discussed by some cartographers but is not recognized in Bertin's semiology of graphics (Bertin 1967, 1983a). Two alternative relationships constituting arbitrariness, sense versus reference, are discussed for cartographic signs. Both forms of arbitrariness are recognized as being present, and examples are given. Arbitrariness as reference is discussed, providing a theoretical argument for the use of unclassed choropleth maps in preference to classed choropleth maps.
[[2007,4,4
["Cartographic Signs and Arbitrariness
Foundations of the Unity of Science: Towards an International Encyclopaedia of Unified Science vols. 1 and 2.
["Cartographica
[[2025,3,12
[[2004,1,1
[[2004,1,1
10.3138/4462-2125-1312-217T
["0317-7173","1911-9925
[[2004,1,1]]}}}
