Zur Ausstattung geh\u00f6rt selbstverst\u00e4ndlich eine Bibliothek. Sie besitzt alle jemalsgedruckten B\u00fccher und kann deren jedes in unglaublich kurzerZeit bereitstellen. Beides ist - wie gezeigt werden kann - unrealistisch. Ein weiterer utopischer Zug ist die \u00fcberaus schwacheBenutzung. Das ist zun\u00e4chst eine satirische Kritik an SchmidtsDarmst\u00e4dter K\u00fcnstlerkollegen; in das Jahr 2008 projiziert, f\u00fchrt sie die Bibliothek, ja die ganze Inselutopie ad absurdum. \nArno Schmidt's novel \u00bbThe Egghead Republic\u00ab, which was first published in German in 1957, is set in the year 2008. Along witha negatively utopian world largely destroyed by an atomic catastrophe, the author envisions a positive utopia of an artificialisland built prior to the atomic wars. On it are stored all the cultural assets of the Earth, which hence provide the geniuses of theworld with ideal working conditions. One of these is, of course,a library. It holds all previously printed books and can make anyof them available in an incredibly short time. Both are - as canbe shown - unrealistic. A further utopian element is the exceedingly low level of usage.
