Geburtstag und 75.Todestag im Jahre 2009 sind Anlass, des gro\u00dfen deutschen Bibliothekars zu gedenken, der als Mitarbeiter des preu\u00dfischen Kultusministeriums in Berlin, als Direktor der Universit\u00e4tsbibliotheken Greifswald und Breslau und schlie\u00dflich als Nachfolger Harnacks und erster Berufsbibliothekar im Amt des Generaldirektors der Preu\u00dfischen Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin die Entwicklung der modernen Bibliothek in Deutschland ma\u00dfgeblich bestimmt hat. Die Einf\u00fchrung der Preu\u00dfischen Instruktionen (PI), die Arbeiten am preu\u00dfischen Gesamtkatalog, die erste reichsweite Leihverkehrsordnung von 1924 w\u00e4ren ohne Milkaus inspirierende und vorw\u00e4rts dr\u00e4ngende Mitarbeit kaum gelungen, die Begr\u00fcndung einer fundierten Bibliothekswissenschaft in Deutschland ohne das von Milkau ins Leben gerufene Bibliothekswissenschaftliche Institut an der Berliner Universit\u00e4t und ohne das von ihm initiierte Handbuch der Bibliothekswissenschaft nicht denkbar. \nThis article commemorates the eminent German librarian Fritz Milkau on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of his birth and 75th anniversary of his death. Milkau was employed at the Prussian Ministry of Culture in Berlin, then as library director at the universities of Greifswald and Breslau (Wroc\u00e4aw), and finally as the successor to Adolf von Harnack and first professional librarian in the office of General Director at the Prussian State Library in Berlin. There he decisively influenced the development of modern librarianship in Germany. The use of cataloguing rules titled \u00bbPrussian Instructions\u00ab, or \u00bbPI\u00ab, the creation of a Prussian Union Catalogue, and the first nation-wide inter-library lendingstatute (1924) would hardly have been possible without Milkau's inspirational and pioneering involvement.
