Many researchers agree that these modalities are complementary to each other and that their combination can improve the accuracy in affective user models. However, there is a shortage of research in empirical work concerning the strengths and weaknesses of each modality so that more accurate recognizers can be built. In our research, we have investigated the recognition of emotions with respect to 6 basic emotional states, namely happiness, sadness, surprise, anger and disgust as well as the emotionless state which we refer to as neutral. We have concluded that, in cases where a single modality may be deficient in providing emotion recognition evidence, the recognition process can be supported and complemented by the other modalities.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3233\/978-1-58603-900-4-250","type":"book-chapter","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,20]],"date-time":"2025-02-20T12:06:08Z","timestamp":1740053168000},"source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Designing a multi-modal affective knowledge-based user interface: combining empirical studies"],"prefix":"10.3233","author":[{"family":"Virvou Maria","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"family":"Tsihrintzis George","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"family":"Alepis Efthymios","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"family":"Stathopoulou Ioanna-Ourania","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"7437","container-title":["Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence and Applications","Knowledge-Based Software Engineering"],"original-title":[],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,20]],"date-time":"2025-02-20T12:12:19Z","timestamp":1740053539000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/www.medra.org\/servlet\/aliasResolver?alias=iospressISSNISBN&issn=0922-6389&volume=180&spage=250"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2008]]},"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3233\/978-1-58603-900-4-250","relation":{},"ISSN":["0922-6389"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0922-6389","type":"print"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2008]]}}}
