Building upon extensive neuroscience research on hippocampal processing, neural density, and connectivity we have implemented a computational architecture using variants of adaptive resonance theory artificial neural networks. Consequently, this model is capable of encoding, storing and processing multi-modal sensory inputs as well as simulating qualitative memory phenomena such as auto-association and recall. The performance of the model is compared with human subject performance. Thus, in this paper we present a neurologically plausible artificial neural network computational architecture of episodic memory and recall modeled after cortical-hippocampal structure and function.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3233\/978-1-60750-661-4-175","type":"book-chapter","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,20]],"date-time":"2025-02-20T12:06:08Z","timestamp":1740053168000},"source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["A Neurologically Plausible Artificial Neural Network Computational Architecture of Episodic Memory and Recall"],"prefix":"10.3233","author":[{"family":"Vineyard Craig M.","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"family":"Bernard Michael L.","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"family":"Taylor Shawn E.","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"family":"Caudell Thomas P.","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"family":"Watson Patrick","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"family":"Verzi Stephen","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"family":"Cohen Neal J.","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"family":"Eichenbaum Howard","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"7437","container-title":["Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence and Applications","Biologically Inspired Cognitive Architectures 2010"],"original-title":[],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,20]],"date-time":"2025-02-20T12:46:10Z","timestamp":1740055570000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/www.medra.org\/servlet\/aliasResolver?alias=iospressISSNISBN&issn=0922-6389&volume=221&spage=175"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2010]]},"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3233\/978-1-60750-661-4-175","relation":{},"ISSN":["0922-6389"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0922-6389","type":"print"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2010]]}}}
