As society calls for cost-effectiveness, and human expertise or expert guidance are not always available, decision support systems (DSSs) are proposed as the solutions. These solutions, however, do not necessarily correspond with the basic needs of their targeted users. We will show this through a review of the literature related to health care workers and the various factors that have an influence on their performances. Furthermore, we will use these empirical findings to argue that the AIM community must go beyond its decision support philosophy, whereby the gaps in human expertise are filled in by the computer. In the future, joint emphasis must be placed on decision support and the promotion towards independent and self-sufficient problem solving. In order to implement this paradigm change, the AIM community will have to incorporate findings from the research discipline of AI in Education.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3233\/978-1-60750-896-0-1232","type":"book-chapter","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,21]],"date-time":"2025-02-21T17:13:02Z","timestamp":1740157982000},"source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Health Care Workers and Their Needs: The Forgotten Shadow of AIM Research"],"prefix":"10.3233","author":[{"family":"Lillehaug Svein-Ivar","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"family":"Lajoie Susanne","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"7437","container-title":["Studies in Health Technology and Informatics","MEDINFO '98"],"original-title":[],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,21]],"date-time":"2025-02-21T18:05:56Z","timestamp":1740161156000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/www.medra.org\/servlet\/aliasResolver?alias=iospressISSNISBN&issn=0926-9630&volume=52&spage=1232"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[1998]]},"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3233\/978-1-60750-896-0-1232","relation":{},"ISSN":["0926-9630"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0926-9630","type":"print"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[1998]]}}}
