Guidelines promise to improve the efficiency and quality of health care by reducing practice variability. However, it has been recognized that the use of these guidelines by clinicians in their daily practice is rather low. Current evidence from controlled trials indicates that guideline-based advice at the point of care is more likely to be successful at influencing clinical behavior.
