A formalization of guideline-based chronological steps of treatment has been proposed to resolve the semantic ambiguities of the original document. The GEM DTD has been extended in order to standardize both decision variable and action representations in recommendations. Under these assumptions, the 1999 Canadian Recommendations for the management of hypertension have been marked-up as a GEM-encoded instance of the extended DTD. An XML parser has been used to extract the relevant elements as IF and THEN clauses of decision rules. This GEM application generated 104 rules to be compared to the 98 rules manually developed from the same guideline during the ASTI project.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3233\/978-1-60750-939-4-531","type":"book-chapter","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,21]],"date-time":"2025-02-21T17:13:02Z","timestamp":1740157982000},"source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Interpretative framework of chronic disease management to guide textual guideline GEM-encoding"],"prefix":"10.3233","author":[{"family":"Georg Gersende","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"family":"Séroussi Brigitte","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"family":"Bouaud Jacques","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"7437","container-title":["Studies in Health Technology and Informatics","The New Navigators: from Professionals to Patients"],"original-title":[],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,21]],"date-time":"2025-02-21T17:56:02Z","timestamp":1740160562000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/www.medra.org\/servlet\/aliasResolver?alias=iospressISSNISBN&issn=0926-9630&volume=95&spage=531"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2003]]},"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3233\/978-1-60750-939-4-531","relation":{},"ISSN":["0926-9630"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0926-9630","type":"print"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2003]]}}}
