Interventions for reducing the risk of relapse for persons with past history of these diseases are well agreed-on. On the contrary, the risk status of persons without such a history varies greatly, and this variability implies a range in the intensity of interventions. In several countries, guidelines for general practitioners have been diffused about pharmaceutical prescriptions in presence of various risk degrees. In particular, in Italy, a governmental drug management commission has established that statins, the most used cholesterol lowering medicines, can be refunded by the National Healthcare System only if prescribed to hyper-cholesterol patients with a global risk greater than 20%. The question is: how to calculate the risk? We performed a review of both the web and the literature and we found a lot of different “risk calculators”. By means of a simulation study, we showed that these tools, when applied to the same person, may lead to very different results. We estimated the economic impact of using one or another calculator.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3233\/978-1-60750-939-4-617","type":"book-chapter","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,21]],"date-time":"2025-02-21T15:26:30Z","timestamp":1740151590000},"source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Cardiovascular Risk Calculators: Understanding Differences and Realising Economic Implications"],"prefix":"10.3233","author":[{"family":"Quaglini Silvana","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"family":"Stefanelli Mario","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"family":"Boiocchi Lorenzo","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"family":"Campari Fabio","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"family":"Cavallini Anna","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"family":"Micieli Giuseppe","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]}],"member":"7437","container-title":["Studies in Health Technology and Informatics","The New Navigators: from Professionals to Patients"],"original-title":[],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,21]],"date-time":"2025-02-21T16:19:58Z","timestamp":1740154798000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/www.medra.org\/servlet\/aliasResolver?alias=iospressISSNISBN&issn=0926-9630&volume=95&spage=617"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2003]]},"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3233\/978-1-60750-939-4-617","relation":{},"ISSN":["0926-9630"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0926-9630","type":"print"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2003]]}}}
