Internationally, prominent examples of national and regional HIIs exist that provide a means for achievement of this goal. Using the United States' Nation Health Information Infrastructure (NHII) as an example, the authors describe expansion of the conceptual framework to explicitly acknowledge the role of access to evidence at the overlap between the three dimensions of the NHII to create an “evidence-based” link between interrelated components. The role of national measures in setting e-communication goals and evaluating the evolving infrastructure in meeting informational needs of users is discussed. Additionally, automated knowledge management tools such as practice guidelines are presented as a means by which access to critical information is delivered to users, in a format that is appropriatefor their health literacy level and that provides adequate supportfor informed decision making.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3233\/978-1-60750-949-3-1187","type":"book-chapter","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,22]],"date-time":"2025-02-22T23:19:12Z","timestamp":1740266352000},"source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["National and Regional Health Information Infrastructures: Making Use of Information Technology to Promote Access to Evidence"],"prefix":"10.3233","author":[{"family":"Dykes Patricia","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"family":"Bakken Suzanne","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]}],"member":"7437","container-title":["Studies in Health Technology and Informatics","MEDINFO 2004"],"original-title":[],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,22]],"date-time":"2025-02-22T23:29:17Z","timestamp":1740266957000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/www.medra.org\/servlet\/aliasResolver?alias=iospressISSNISBN&issn=0926-9630&volume=107&spage=1187"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2004]]},"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3233\/978-1-60750-949-3-1187","relation":{},"ISSN":["0926-9630"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0926-9630","type":"print"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2004]]}}}
