Methods: A typology of term variants is presented as a systematic approach in order to favour the implementation of an exhaustive solution. Then, an algorithm able to handle all variants is designed. Results: Using MetaMap, single terms are analyzed with a success rate varying between 68 and 88 %; the algorithm presented in this paper improves this situation. Conclusions: This experience shows that a semantic driven method, based on a thesaurus, provides a satisfactory solution to the problem of variability of a single term. The presented typology is representative of most variants in a language.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3233\/978-1-60750-949-3-322","type":"book-chapter","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,22]],"date-time":"2025-02-22T23:19:12Z","timestamp":1740266352000},"source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Coping with the Variability of Medical Terms"],"prefix":"10.3233","author":[{"family":"Baud Robert H","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"family":"Ruch Patrick","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"family":"Gaudinat Arnaud","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"family":"Fabry Paul","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"family":"Lovis Christian","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"family":"Geissbuhler Antoine","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"7437","container-title":["Studies in Health Technology and Informatics","MEDINFO 2004"],"original-title":[],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,22]],"date-time":"2025-02-22T23:28:35Z","timestamp":1740266915000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/www.medra.org\/servlet\/aliasResolver?alias=iospressISSNISBN&issn=0926-9630&volume=107&spage=322"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2004]]},"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3233\/978-1-60750-949-3-322","relation":{},"ISSN":["0926-9630"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0926-9630","type":"print"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2004]]}}}
