A total of 59 third-year students were randomly assigned to four groups: Group-l used a text-book for self-instruction, Group-2 used CP, Group-3 used both types of learning materials, and Group-4 did not learn. Learning performance was evaluated by multiple-choice examination and OSCE. In order to clarify the influence of students’ academic ability on the effectiveness of CAI, statistical analyses were conducted, assigning students as either high or medium or low performance students. High performance students from Group-I, - 2 and -3 did not differ significantly in test performance after self-instruction. However, low performance students in Group-l scored significantly lower than those in Group-2 and -3. All students in Group-2 and -3 reported that CP stimulated willingness to learn and assisted understanding. The present analysis suggested that effectiveness of CAl might be associated with the academic ability of students.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3233\/978-1-60750-949-3-894","type":"book-chapter","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,21]],"date-time":"2025-02-21T17:07:49Z","timestamp":1740157669000},"source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":1,"title":["Academic Performance and Comparative Effectiveness of Computer- and Textbook-based Self-Instruction"],"prefix":"10.3233","author":[{"family":"Kurihara Yukio","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"family":"Kuramoto Shu","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"family":"Matsuura Kimio","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"family":"Miki Yoichiro","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"family":"Oda Katsushi","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"family":"Seo Hiromi","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"family":"Watabe Teruaki","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"family":"Qayumi A Karim","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]}],"member":"7437","container-title":["Studies in Health Technology and Informatics","MEDINFO 2004"],"original-title":[],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,21]],"date-time":"2025-02-21T18:00:30Z","timestamp":1740160830000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/www.medra.org\/servlet\/aliasResolver?alias=iospressISSNISBN&issn=0926-9630&volume=107&spage=894"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2004]]},"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3233\/978-1-60750-949-3-894","relation":{},"ISSN":["0926-9630"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0926-9630","type":"print"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2004]]}}}
