This process involves converting algorithms into numerical vectors (represented by the spiking activity of a group of neurons) and operations on those vectors (implemented via synaptic connections between groups). We have used this technique to create a neural model capable of solving the Tower of Hanoi task, involving symbolic reasoning, planning, and goal retrieval. Constructing this neural cognitive model involved breaking the task down into sixteen general-purpose &amp;ldquo;rules&amp;rdquo; which can be implemented by specifying particular synaptic connections from the cortex to the basal ganglia, and from the thalamus back to the cortex. In this paper, we present a breakdown and discussion of these rules, showing how they differ from those found in traditional symbolic cognitive models.
