Here we describe the results of a study that examined the effect of ambient (background) sound on the perception of visual fidelity (defined with respect to texture resolution). Results suggest that the perception of visual fidelity is dependent on ambient sound and more specifically, white noise can have detrimental effects on our perception of high quality visuals. The results of this study will guide future studies that will ultimately aid in developing an understanding of the role that fidelity, and multi-modal interactions play with respect to knowledge transfer and retention for users of virtual simulations and serious games.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3233\/978-1-61499-022-2-386","type":"book-chapter","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,21]],"date-time":"2025-02-21T17:46:46Z","timestamp":1740160006000},"source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Developing Effective Serious Games: The Effect of Background Sound on Visual Fidelity Perception with Varying Texture Resolution"],"prefix":"10.3233","author":[{"family":"Rojas David","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"family":"Kapralos Bill","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"family":"Cristancho Sayra","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"family":"Collins Karen","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"family":"Hogue Andrew","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"family":"Conati Cristina","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"family":"Dubrowski Adam","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"7437","container-title":["Studies in Health Technology and Informatics","Medicine Meets Virtual Reality 19"],"original-title":[],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,21]],"date-time":"2025-02-21T18:29:05Z","timestamp":1740162545000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/www.medra.org\/servlet\/aliasResolver?alias=iospressISSNISBN&issn=0926-9630&volume=173&spage=386"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2012]]},"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3233\/978-1-61499-022-2-386","relation":{},"ISSN":["0926-9630"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0926-9630","type":"print"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2012]]}}}
