In this paper it is claimed that resolutions should be studied under the assumption that they are generated through the acquisition of preference information, and that this implies that the existing study of resolutions has limited applicability. A formalisation of preference-based resolutions is defined in the context of the ASPIC+framework for structured argumentation, and several properties of resolutions are proven or disproven. It is also argued that when resolutions are modelled without specifying the structure of arguments, then it is easy to overlook that assumptions made at the abstract level do not hold for all reasonable instantiations of the abstract framework, thus reducing its significance.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3233\/978-1-61499-111-3-310","type":"book-chapter","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,21]],"date-time":"2025-02-21T10:26:53Z","timestamp":1740133613000},"source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Resolutions in Structured Argumentation"],"prefix":"10.3233","author":[{"family":"Modgil Sanjay","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"family":"Prakken Henry","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"7437","container-title":["Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence and Applications","Computational Models of Argument"],"original-title":[],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,21]],"date-time":"2025-02-21T11:26:11Z","timestamp":1740137171000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/www.medra.org\/servlet\/aliasResolver?alias=iospressISSNISBN&issn=0922-6389&volume=245&spage=310"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2012]]},"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3233\/978-1-61499-111-3-310","relation":{},"ISSN":["0922-6389"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0922-6389","type":"print"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2012]]}}}
