Popular approaches, like OpenCL and CUDA, are low-level and offer no support for the two most complicated issues: 1) programming multiple GPUs within a stand-alone computer, and 2) managing distributed systems that integrate several such computers. In particular, distributed systems require application developers to use a mix of different programming models, e.g., MPI together with OpenCL or CUDA. We propose a uniform approach based on OpenCL for programming both stand-alone and distributed systems with GPUs. The approach implementation is based on two parts: 1) the SkelCL library for high-level application programming on heterogeneous stand-alone computers with multi-core CPUs and multiple GPUs, and 2) the dOpenCL middleware for transparent execution of OpenCL programs on several stand-alone computers connected over a network.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3233\/978-1-61499-125-0-430","type":"book-chapter","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,20]],"date-time":"2025-02-20T12:06:08Z","timestamp":1740053168000},"source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["A High-Level Programming Approach for Distributed Systems with Accelerators"],"prefix":"10.3233","author":[{"family":"Steuwer Michel","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"family":"Kegel Philipp","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"family":"Gorlatch Sergei","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"7437","container-title":["Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence and Applications","New Trends in Software Methodologies, Tools and Techniques"],"original-title":[],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,20]],"date-time":"2025-02-20T12:16:48Z","timestamp":1740053808000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/www.medra.org\/servlet\/aliasResolver?alias=iospressISSNISBN&issn=0922-6389&volume=246&spage=430"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2012]]},"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3233\/978-1-61499-125-0-430","relation":{},"ISSN":["0922-6389"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0922-6389","type":"print"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2012]]}}}
