Rehabilitation as functional training is becoming more and more crucial as well as medical treatment in medical and welfare institution. The recovery of locomotor function for gait disorder like a parkinsonian tremor has important effects for the quality of life for the elderly. It is necessary for the elderly to evaluate the condition of walking ability by objective estimate data. But the ability has been evaluated by the subjective judgment of the physical therapist in the medical practice. Therefore, this method falls short of accuracy and generality for evaluating the patient's walking state. We carried out experiment aimed at discriminating the walking ability by three-axis acceleration sensor and Support Vector Machine (SVM) in order to evaluate the ability in an objective way. As a result, we obtained an average identification rate of 86.5% with the Gaussian kernel when the frequency component of the normalized acceleration was used for the feature quantity.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3233\/978-1-61499-405-3-345","type":"book-chapter","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,21]],"date-time":"2025-02-21T10:27:05Z","timestamp":1740133625000},"source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Identifying and Assessing Walking Ability Using an Accelerometer and a Support Vector Machine"],"prefix":"10.3233","author":[{"family":"Shibata Shin-ichi","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"family":"Beniya Tomoaki","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"family":"Tajima Takuya","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"family":"Abe Takehiko","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"family":"Kimura Haruhiko","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]}],"member":"7437","container-title":["Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence and Applications","Smart Digital Futures 2014"],"original-title":[],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,21]],"date-time":"2025-02-21T11:22:07Z","timestamp":1740136927000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/www.medra.org\/servlet\/aliasResolver?alias=iospressISSNISBN&issn=0922-6389&volume=262&spage=345"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2014]]},"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3233\/978-1-61499-405-3-345","relation":{},"ISSN":["0922-6389"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0922-6389","type":"print"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2014]]}}}
