To provide timely support in this dynamic environment, automated systems need to be equipped with tools— lacking in existing systems—for real-time prioritisation of the application tasks (missions), selection and alignment of relevant information, and efficient reasoning at a situation level. In this paper, we present METIS—an industrial prototype system for supporting real-time, actionable maritime situational awareness. In particular, we focus on the innovation of METIS, which lies in the employment and integration of several state-of-the-art AI technologies to build the overall system's intelligence. These include reconfiguration of multi-context systems, natural language processing of heterogeneous (un)structured data and probabilistic reasoning of uncertain information. The capabilities of the system have been demonstrated in a proof of concept, which is deployed as a situational awareness plugin in the Tacticos command-and-control platform of our industrial partner. The principles exploited by METIS are giving valuable insights into what is considered to become the next generation of situational awareness systems.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3233\/978-1-61499-419-0-1197","type":"book-chapter","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,24]],"date-time":"2025-02-24T11:59:50Z","timestamp":1740398390000},"source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":2,"title":["An Integrated Reconfigurable System for Maritime Situational Awareness"],"prefix":"10.3233","author":[{"family":"Velikova Marina","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"family":"Novák Peter","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"family":"Huijbrechts Bas","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"family":"Laarhuis Jan","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"family":"Hoeksma Jesper","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"family":"Michels Steffen","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"7437","container-title":["Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence and Applications","ECAI 2014"],"original-title":[],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,24]],"date-time":"2025-02-24T12:04:54Z","timestamp":1740398694000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/www.medra.org\/servlet\/aliasResolver?alias=iospressISSNISBN&issn=0922-6389&volume=263&spage=1197"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2014]]},"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3233\/978-1-61499-419-0-1197","relation":{},"ISSN":["0922-6389"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0922-6389","type":"print"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2014]]}}}
