However, actual care may deviate from the planned CP, and analysis of these deviations can help clinicians refine the CP and reduce medical errors. In this paper, we propose a CP variance analysis method to automatically identify the deviations between actual patient traces in electronic medical records (EMR) and a multistage CP. As the care stage information is usually unavailable in EMR, we first align every trace with the CP using a hidden Markov model. From the aligned traces, we report three types of deviations for every care stage: additional activities, absent activities and violated constraints, which are identified by using the techniques of temporal logic and binomial tests. The method has been applied to a CP for the management of congestive heart failure and real world EMR, providing meaningful evidence for the further improvement of care quality.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3233\/978-1-61499-432-9-715","type":"book-chapter","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,21]],"date-time":"2025-02-21T14:45:03Z","timestamp":1740149103000},"source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":1,"title":["Automatic Variance Analysis of Multistage Care Pathways"],"prefix":"10.3233","author":[{"family":"Li Xiang","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"family":"Liu Haifeng","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"family":"Zhang Shilei","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"family":"Mei Jing","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"family":"Xie Guotong","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"family":"Yu Yiqin","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"family":"Li Jing","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"family":"Lakshmanan Geetika T.","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]}],"member":"7437","container-title":["Studies in Health Technology and Informatics","e-Health – For Continuity of Care"],"original-title":[],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,21]],"date-time":"2025-02-21T14:53:08Z","timestamp":1740149588000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/www.medra.org\/servlet\/aliasResolver?alias=iospressISSNISBN&issn=0926-9630&volume=205&spage=715"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2014]]},"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3233\/978-1-61499-432-9-715","relation":{},"ISSN":["0926-9630"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0926-9630","type":"print"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2014]]}}}
