After an explanation of how Pollock's concerns can be addressed probabilistically, the paper continues with a formal treatment of reasons, defeaters, and argument strength, while remaining within standard probability theory and its underlying classical logic. Pollock studied puzzles about self-defeat and collective defeat (associated with the lottery paradox), and it is shown how these can be addressed probabilistically. A normative framework for arguments and their strength, as provided here, is needed for the development of rationality support tools for the prevention of reasoning errors.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3233\/978-1-61499-436-7-433","type":"book-chapter","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,21]],"date-time":"2025-02-21T10:27:24Z","timestamp":1740133644000},"source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":4,"title":["Arguments and Their Strength: Revisiting Pollock's Anti-Probabilistic Starting Points"],"prefix":"10.3233","author":[{"family":"Verheij Bart","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]}],"member":"7437","container-title":["Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence and Applications","Computational Models of Argument"],"original-title":[],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,21]],"date-time":"2025-02-21T10:58:37Z","timestamp":1740135517000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/www.medra.org\/servlet\/aliasResolver?alias=iospressISSNISBN&issn=0922-6389&volume=266&spage=433"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2014]]},"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3233\/978-1-61499-436-7-433","relation":{},"ISSN":["0922-6389"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0922-6389","type":"print"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2014]]}}}
