The need to reduce carbon emission is acknowledged universally irrespective of which side of the climate debate. The development of future electric vehicles will have significant benefits on the environment if this vehicle can be adopted by the general public as the primary mode of transport. However, the existing infrastructure for manufacturing and supporting fossil fuel based vehicles does not fit the operation model of electric vehicle. The industry, supply chain, community and general public need to understand how the new electric vehicle operation system works and what benefits it will bring to them. This paper examines the manufacturing and operational issues of electric vehicles and explores the view of a new global supply chain that will foster design, develop, manufacture and support of electric vehicles.
