It is a common assumption that trust has normative aspects that are irreducible to economic rationality. We examine this claim by using artificial, ideally rational agents. If it turns out that artificial agents tend to trust each other while they only attempt to maximize their expected utilities, it may shed light on the genealogical question of how the normative aspects of trust arise for agents with no normative concern. In Section 1, we give a brief summary of the recent philosophical literature on trust, and proceed, in Section 2, to reporting the result of our simulation in which artificial agents archive a high degree of trust in their partners by taking account of the social history of interaction concerning other people, as opposed to the interactive history concerning themselves and their partners.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3233\/978-1-61499-480-0-231","type":"book-chapter","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,21]],"date-time":"2025-02-21T10:27:05Z","timestamp":1740133625000},"source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Trust and Artifacts"],"prefix":"10.3233","author":[{"family":"Dalla Libera Fabio","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"family":"Kasaki Masashi","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"family":"Yoshikawa Yuichiro","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"family":"Koyama Tora","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]}],"member":"7437","container-title":["Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence and Applications","Sociable Robots and the Future of Social Relations"],"original-title":[],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,21]],"date-time":"2025-02-21T11:33:06Z","timestamp":1740137586000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/www.medra.org\/servlet\/aliasResolver?alias=iospressISSNISBN&issn=0922-6389&volume=273&spage=231"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2014]]},"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3233\/978-1-61499-480-0-231","relation":{},"ISSN":["0922-6389"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0922-6389","type":"print"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2014]]}}}
