This paper proposes a standard operating procedure (SOP) to evaluate the performance of scientific computation on various platforms in National Center for High-performance Computing (NCHC), including ALPS, the proprietary Formosa 3 PC cluster (F3), and virtual machines (VM). This study adopts three packages of linear system solvers: HPL (High Performance LINPACK), HIPS (Hierarchical Iterative Parallel Solver) and PETSc (Portable, Extensible Toolkit for Scientific Computation) to evaluate the performance of scientific computation as it pertains to industrial applications. HPL is computing dominant for solving large dense linear systems while sparse matrix computations via HIPS and PETSc are memory intensive. These complex, un-symmetric, non-positive definite sparse linear systems arise in industrial applications in the UF collection. We hope to provide a valuable reference for industrial applications.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3233\/978-1-61499-484-8-1446","type":"book-chapter","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,20]],"date-time":"2025-02-20T12:06:08Z","timestamp":1740053168000},"source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Scientific Evaluation on a Virtual Machine"],"prefix":"10.3233","author":[{"family":"Chou Chau-Yi","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"family":"Chen Kuen-Tsann","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"7437","container-title":["Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence and Applications","Intelligent Systems and Applications"],"original-title":[],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,20]],"date-time":"2025-02-20T12:50:55Z","timestamp":1740055855000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/www.medra.org\/servlet\/aliasResolver?alias=iospressISSNISBN&issn=0922-6389&volume=274&spage=1446"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2015]]},"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3233\/978-1-61499-484-8-1446","relation":{},"ISSN":["0922-6389"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0922-6389","type":"print"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2015]]}}}
