Fuzzy controllers (FCs) are used and are learned through particle swarm optimization (PSO) using only simple reinforcement signals. All of the free parameters in the FCs are optimized through PSO. The evolutionary learning approach avoids the cumbersome process of collecting input-output training data pairs in supervised learning. The use of reinforcement signals avoids the definition of complex objective functions for FC performance evaluation. The reinforcement PSO-designed FC is first applied to the control of a single robot for the wall-following task. The design approach is then applied to control two robots cooperatively carrying an object for the same wall-following task. A training environment is created for learning the wall-following behavior.
