This strategy, effectively titled Science Fiction Prototyping, utilizes science fiction stories and material to “explore the possible implications of research and technology on humans, societies, and the world.” It is also possible that these prototypes can be used to increase STEM motivation in students. The researchers will first perform a meta-analysis and literature review to determine the present outlook of STEM curriculum, student interest in STEM careers, and student enrollment in STEM careers after graduation. Other parts of the research project include a pilot study to explore the feasibility of using science fiction prototypes within a high school environment to increase student interest and attraction to STEM related careers.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3233\/978-1-61499-530-2-189","type":"book-chapter","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,19]],"date-time":"2025-02-19T13:02:07Z","timestamp":1739970127000},"source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Using Science Fiction Prototyping to Decrease the Decline of Interest in STEM Topics at the High School Level"],"prefix":"10.3233","author":[{"family":"De Lepe Mary","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"family":"Olmstead William","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"family":"Russell Connor","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"family":"Cazarez Lizbeth","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"family":"Austin Lloyd","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"7437","container-title":["Ambient Intelligence and Smart Environments","Workshop Proceedings of the 11th International Conference on Intelligent Environments"],"original-title":[],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,19]],"date-time":"2025-02-19T13:21:14Z","timestamp":1739971274000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/www.medra.org\/servlet\/aliasResolver?alias=iospressISBN&isbn=978-1-61499-529-6&spage=189&doi=10.3233\/978-1-61499-530-2-189"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2015]]},"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3233\/978-1-61499-530-2-189","relation":{"is-cited-by":[{"id-type":"doi","id":"10.1007\/978-981-13-0708-9_18","asserted-by":"object"}]},"ISSN":["1875-4163"],"issn-type":[{"value":"1875-4163","type":"print"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2015]]}}}
