In this study, we applied the MTERMS NLP system and machine learning classification algorithms to identify patients with depression using discharge summaries. Domain experts reviewed both the training and test cases, and classified these cases as depression with a high, intermediate, and low confidence. For depression cases with high confidence, all of the algorithms we tested performed similarly, with MTERMS' knowledge-based decision tree slightly better than the machine learning classifiers, achieving an F-measure of 89.6%. MTERMS also achieved the highest F-measure (70.6%) on intermediate confidence cases. The RIPPER rule learner was the best performing machine learning method, with an F-measure of 70.0%, and a higher precision but lower recall than MTERMS. The proposed NLP-based approach was able to identify a significant portion of the depression cases (about 20%) that were not on the coded diagnosis list.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3233\/978-1-61499-564-7-629","type":"book-chapter","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,22]],"date-time":"2025-02-22T23:19:26Z","timestamp":1740266366000},"source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":4,"title":["Identifying Patients with Depression Using Free-text Clinical Documents"],"prefix":"10.3233","author":[{"family":"Zhou Li","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"family":"Baughman Amy W.","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"family":"Lei Victor J.","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"family":"Lai Kenneth H.","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"family":"Navathe Amol S.","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"family":"Chang Frank","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"family":"Sordo Margarita","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"family":"Topaz Maxim","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"family":"Zhong Feiran","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"family":"Murrali Madhavan","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"family":"Navathe Shamkant","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"family":"Rocha Roberto A.","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]}],"member":"7437","container-title":["Studies in Health Technology and Informatics","MEDINFO 2015: eHealth-enabled Health"],"original-title":[],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,22]],"date-time":"2025-02-22T23:32:56Z","timestamp":1740267176000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/www.medra.org\/servlet\/aliasResolver?alias=iospressISBN&isbn=978-1-61499-563-0&spage=629&doi=10.3233\/978-1-61499-564-7-629"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2015]]},"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3233\/978-1-61499-564-7-629","relation":{},"ISSN":["0926-9630"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0926-9630","type":"print"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2015]]}}}
