Physicians usually try to monitor the changes of breast tumours during and after the chemotherapy. In this paper, we propose an automatic method for visualising and quantifying breast tumour changes for patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment. Given two successive mammograms for the same breast, one before the treatment and one after it, the proposed system firstly applies some preprocessing on the mammograms. Then, it determines the optical flow between them. Finally, it calculates the strain tensors to visualise and quantify breast tumour changes (shrinkage or expansion). We assess the performance of five optical flow methods through landmark-errors and statistical tests. The optical flow method that produces the best performance is used to calculate the strain tensors. The proposed method provides a good visualisation of breast tumor changes and it also quantifies them. Our method may help physicians to plan the treatment courses for their patients.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3233\/978-1-61499-578-4-237","type":"book-chapter","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,21]],"date-time":"2025-02-21T10:27:24Z","timestamp":1740133644000},"source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Analysis of the evolution of breast tumours using strain tensors"],"prefix":"10.3233","author":[{"family":"Abdel-Nasser Mohamed","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"family":"Moreno Antonio","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"family":"Puig Domenec","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]}],"member":"7437","container-title":["Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence and Applications","Artificial Intelligence Research and Development"],"original-title":[],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,21]],"date-time":"2025-02-21T10:52:57Z","timestamp":1740135177000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/www.medra.org\/servlet\/aliasResolver?alias=iospressISBN&isbn=978-1-61499-577-7&spage=237&doi=10.3233\/978-1-61499-578-4-237"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2015]]},"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3233\/978-1-61499-578-4-237","relation":{},"ISSN":["0922-6389"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0922-6389","type":"print"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2015]]}}}
